      There are a few things to consider when converting basement space properly so that it stays dry, warm and mildew free. Establishing that your basement is above or below grade (ground level) will help determine the prerequisites and approach. Issues like vapor and moisture barriers and hydrostatic pressure and water tables all need to be addressed before space planning and beautifying. Modern house building standards prepare basement slabs and foundation walls assuming this space wil be used for living space. The age and type of your perimeter drainage and damp proofing should also be considered before proceeding with a below grade basement renovation and remodeling project.

      If you require a bathroom or kitchen in your new found living space be prepared to have portions of your basement floor jack hammered and excavated so that the sink and/or tub drains can be integrated into the existing drainage structure with the proper slope and venting. When performed by an experienced contractor this isn't as complicated as you might think and that extra bathroom or kitchen provides tremendous convenience and property value benefits. The "doing it later" philosophy will involve removing finished flooring and possibly walls so its always good to include this asset in the planning.
