Changing the interior doors in a house can be one of the most attractive upgrades for your dollar since a lot of new homes throughtout the decades have had the same boring looking 6 panel or smooth paneled doors installed by developers attempting to keep costs and choices neuteral. The replacement doors can be replaced as 'slabs only' thus leaving the frames or casings intact or 'prehung' with frames if your thinking of taking it a step further and upgrading the door casings aswell.

There is a superb amount of choices these days when it comes to Doors and Windows. With Exterior doors you have Metal, Wood and Fiberglass. These days metal clad doors are more for commercial applications or garages and basement doors. Wood doors are beautifull and the design choices are plentifull. However it is important that they are finished properly and sealed on all 4 sides with stain and enough coats of varathane which increases the cost and is best done in a shop with a spray booth.

It is also important to remember that a lot of suppliers use the terminology 'solid wood/core' doors on what is actually a 'veneer' door where a thin layer of the nice looking wood you see covers the substructure of the door which might be made of compressed wood chips, MDF or pieces of wood glued together. In an exterior application with a high moisture enviroment and temperature differentials from the warm inside and cold side of the door the mixture of materials will expand and contract at a different rate may cause seperation, delamination, warping and chipping over time.

Fiberglass doors are a great choice for durability, appearance and cost. They are not easily identified from real wood doors and come in either smooth or textured surfaces with a wide variety of factory solid colors and stain color options (yes stain). Another thing to remember with stain grade wood doors is wether or not its really ready for stain or not. i.e. Will the finisher have to spend (and charge) 4 hours prep sanding the door for stain or only 20 min. This comes down to the door builders equipment sharpness, wood quality, wood storage moisture and other procedures. Additional and unnecessary sanding usually 'rounds off' the profile details and makes a new door look like an old door that has been 're-finished' before its even installed.
    Door Anatomy

Did you know that between 2010 and 1990 there has been a 35% increase of more homes in canada but the greenhouse gases from all houses has dropped 6% due to more efficient building products and procedures that address these areas. Althought windows emit natural and free lighting as well as enhancing our living spaces, windows can contribute to heat losses of upto 30%. Insulating factors of a house are rated as R-values. Single pane windows have an approx. R-value of 1. Double glazed windows have an approx. R-value of 1.5 - 2.0. Double glazed Low-e windows have an approx. R-value of 2.5 - 3.0. Double glazed Low-e argon gas filled windows have an approx. R-value of 2.7 - 3.5. Considering fiberglass batt wall insulation starts at R14 (for a 2X4 wall , R19 for 2X6 wall) without including drywall, sheathing and siding its easy to see where improvements can be made to your hydro bill as shown in the thermal image to the right.

Just as important as a windows R -value is the installation R-value of a new window. Since most windows are Not zero clearance they require a space between the window and the house framing usually ranging from 1/4" to 3/8" All houses expand and contract throughout the year and newer houses or additions can 'settle'. If one or more sides of the window is pressed againts the house framing or the window hasn't been 'loosely' fastened' during installation it might cause the 'double glazing' seal to fail which can be identified by condensation within the 2 panes of glass. So now that you have a gap around the window it is important that it is properly insulated with low expansion foam as regular expansion foam can distort a vinyl frame causing the glazing seal to fail aswell. With new construction window installations this is a breeze because the interior window casing and window stool haven't been installed yet and the 'Nailing flange' on the outside only allows the foam to be installed from the inside. This is where some people turn to retrofit or renovation windows which alleviate the need for interior window trim replacement and in some cases exterior trim alterations to reduce costs.
