Going through my bathroom gallery you will notice that i am a bit of a 'nutter' when it comes to alcoves, lighting, borders and tile placement. In order to optimize the best value, I help my clients maintain a balance in such away that allows everything to work as a collective whole without to much emphasis on one item alone. This includes size, shape, color and placement of all individual items working together for a period of time that won't necessarily go out fashion in the near future or exceed anyones budget in the process. |

Points of Interest: The Bulkhead above the shower was removed in order to give this smaller bathroom a more spacious feeling. Not only does this create a form of visual airyness but provides function by allowing the moisture to disipate before collecting on the ceiling above the bathtub in a showering scenario reducing cleaning from mildew build up in the surrounding areas. A bathroom fan was also installed in this bathroom with a digital timer which is much easier and more likely to get used.
The details: You may notice that the alcove was placed in a precise location for the tile sizes that were chosen. Notice the main body tiles start at the top of the tub and line up with the center of the alcove while still allowing for irregular tub lines. The bathtub also has to be installed perfectly in order for this to be accomplished. Consideration for the window location (Not always a scenario in most bathrooms) and the proposed border inlay had to be taken into consideration when establishing the alcove and tile layout. Design elements: The tile continuation behind the toilet provides a warm and collective appearance and also provides a more robust and cleanable surface which is great for those 'Just learning' individuals of the household. I also recommend carrying the back splash tile down the wall and into the door frame on the other side of the cabinet aswell. This is a common bathroom layout for most smaller bathrooms so the added tile cost is minimal but the added effect is very rich and natural in appearance as it compliments the cabinetry on all sides. Coming back to the alcove you will notice that I always use a border or 'picture frame' around the openings. You can also see that the corners were all mitre cuts (diagonal cuts and not 'butt joined') In this case the client wasn't privy to this detail and it was included at no charge. Unexpected After performing the demolition it became evident that the substrate floor around the toilet was rotten which required replacing a section of flooring and 'building up' the supporting structural members. There can be a few different causes for this happening which I won't go into detail at this time however this repair was expidited without causing delays. |
